When in search for a name for one of his new characters, he would spend hours poring over these telephone books. He would then copy about 300 names on the famous yellow manila envelope and then read these names out loud, over and over again, until one of them would sound right for his next character. Simenon went on to write 83 more detective novels featuring Inspector Maigret. His total literary output consisted of about 425 books that were translated into some 50 languages and sold more than 600 million copies worldwide.
